BMC Takes the Lead on World Food Day, Prioritizing Food Hygiene in Bhubaneswar.

Bhubaneswar— In a vibrant culinary city, ensuring foodsafety is paramount. Under the CityActivation for BhubaneswarFirst, today's programme was on hygiene, safe food handling & more healthier safer city.
Hon'ble Mayor of BBSR Smt Sulochana Das, Deputy Mayor, Smt Manjulata Kanhara,BMC Commissioner, Shri Vijay Amruta Kulange ,Addl. Comm-II, ShriSubhendu Sahu ,Standing Committee Chairperson, Shri Biranchi Narayana Mahasupakara ,Team BMC, Corporators, Media & representatives of food establishments participated in today's awareness drive.

In today's programme various food vendors from all 3 zones within BMC jurisdiction joined in and took an oath to practice foodhygiene & serve goodquality food to the customers. About 50 food vendors were invited from each zone.
ZDC of each zone facilitated organizing the event.
Total 150 food vendors participated.
World Food Day is observed globally every year on October 16th to raise awareness about food security and sustainable food systems. In Bhubaneswar, this day holds a special significance as BMC strive to ensure the safety of the food we consume. Food hygiene in street food, restaurants, and hotels is critical for the well-being of our citizens.
Despite the vibrant culinary scene in Bhubaneswar, food hygiene remains a concern. Unsafe practices in food establishments can lead to foodborne illnesses, affecting the health and quality of life of our citizens.
To address these issues and create a healthier, safer city, Bmc launched "City Activation for BhubaneswarFirst." This awareness program focuses on food establishment hygiene under the motto: "Eat safe, stay safe”.
Key Elements of Food Safety:

* Maintain Hygiene for Cooking, Storing & Serving Food: Emphasizing the importance of cleanliness in all stages of food preparation, handling, and service.
* Zero Use of Single-Use Plastic or Foam Material for Food Packing: Promoting environmentally responsible food packaging to reduce plastic waste.
* Always Keep Adequate Size Bins: Ensuring that food establishments have suitable bins for waste disposal.
* Zero Littering & Zero Burning of Waste: Encouraging responsible waste management to maintain cleanliness in and around food establishments.
* Always Give Segregated Waste to Safa Gadi: Promoting waste segregation for responsible disposal.
Addressing the program Mayor Smt Sulochana Das Said By emphasizing these five key elements of food safety, our program aims to significantly impact the lives of Bhubaneswar's citizens. Safer food practices will reduce foodborne illnesses, enhance public health, and promote the reputation of our city as a safe and hygienic culinary destination. She highlighted that Odisha is rapidly emerging as a sports and IT hub, and as a result, the government is actively attracting major corporations to the region. Therefore, there is a need to ensure that our culinary standards and overall attitude align with the expectations of these prominent entities.

Commisoner Shri Vijay Amruta Kulange presented the behavior pattern of food vendors with regards to hygiene and said that “By emphasizing these five key elements of food safety, our program aims to significantly impact the lives of Bhubaneswar's citizens. He also emphasized that as Prasad is offered in front of Lord Jagannath, all vendors should view their customers as divine beings and provide food with the utmost reverence and care . Safer food practices will reduce foodborne illnesses, enhance public health, and promote the reputation of our city as a safe and hygienic culinary destination. He also requested all the food vendors to wear cap, mask, aprons and gloves.
