Odisha Self-immolation & Sexual Harassment Case: Congress demands Odisha CM’s resignation, Judicial Probe

NEW DELHI, July 14: The All India Mahila Congress today demanded the resignation of Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi over the failure of his government to provide justice to a college girl who tried to self-immolate herself following sexual harassment by one of her teachers.
Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters here today, the AIMC president Ms Alka Lamba and MLA Sofia Firdous disclosed that one of the girl student of the Fakir Mohan College in Balasore in Odisha had complained to the Principal about the head of the department Samir Kumar Sahu seeking sexual favours from her.
She said, even after the Balasore MP, who belongs to the BJP, asked the principal that the accused HOD be removed till the pending of the inquiry against him, no action was taken.
Ms Lamba said that after the inquiry committee was constituted, it never summoned the accused, but only harassed the victim student who was threatened and intimidated that in case she could not prove her charges, action will be taken against her.
The Mahila Congress president noted that the victim, who is also ABVP office-bearer, was subjected to so much harassment and trauma that she eventually in desperate bid tried to immolate herself. She said, the victim is struggling between life and death with 95 percent burn injuries.
Odisha MLA Sofia Firdous disclosed that the victim had even tried to meet the Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the state to mark completion of one year of BJP rule, but she was not allowed to do so. She asked the PM to break his silence on the matter.
The Congress leaders pointed out that if this can happen to an office-bearer of the ABVP, a sister affiliate of the BJP which is power in the state, what shall be the fate of ordinary women and people.
