BIS Screen Protector Rules: What Changes for Buyers From April 2027

New Delhi: Smartphone screen protectors sold in India will face mandatory quality standards from April 1, 2027, under new regulations introduced by the government. The move aims to improve product quality, strengthen consumer protection and prevent the sale of substandard screen guards in the Indian market.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), through a notification dated September 21, 2026, brought smartphone screen protectors under the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021. The products will be required to comply with Indian Standard IS 19348:2025, titled Glass Screen Protector — Specification.

What Do the New Rules Require?

Under the new framework, manufacturers and importers will have to ensure that covered screen protectors meet the prescribed BIS requirements before selling them in India. The standards address aspects such as glass quality, dimensions, thickness, strength and optical properties.

The regulations are expected to encourage manufacturers to follow consistent quality-control practices. Consumers may also find it easier to identify compliant products by checking the applicable BIS marking and registration details.

Impact on Prices and Availability

The new rules could affect the smartphone accessories market, particularly manufacturers and importers that currently sell inexpensive screen protectors without meeting the prescribed standards.

Compliance may involve additional testing, certification and manufacturing expenses. These costs could influence retail prices, although the government has not announced any fixed price increase for screen protectors.

Domestic manufacturers could benefit from the move if demand shifts towards products that meet Indian quality requirements. However, smaller businesses may face challenges in meeting certification and testing requirements.

What Should Buyers Know?

Consumers do not need to replace their existing screen protectors simply because the new rules have been introduced. The changes primarily concern products covered by the regulations and their manufacture, import and sale under the applicable framework.

From April 1, 2027, buyers should check product packaging and applicable BIS registration details when purchasing a screen protector. Lower-priced products may remain available, provided they meet the required standards.

A Move Towards Better Quality

The government's decision is intended to bring greater consistency and accountability to India's growing smartphone accessories market. While the regulations could improve quality assurance, their impact on prices and product availability will become clearer as manufacturers prepare for implementation.

The April 2027 deadline gives businesses time to align their products and processes with the prescribed standards, while consumers can expect a stronger emphasis on quality and compliance in the screen protector market.
