Police nab 12 fake guides cheating pilgrims in Puri

Bhubaneswar, Aug 11: In a major crackdown on fraudsters exploiting devotees, Singhadwar and Town police in Puri arrested 12 persons for posing as temple guides and cheating non-Odia pilgrims visiting the Holy City for the darshan of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra.
According to police sources, these impostors targeted visitors unfamiliar with the traditions and layout of the 12th-century Jagannath Temple. They allegedly provided false information, misled pilgrims, and demanded hefty payments, causing financial loss and harassment to the devotees.
The arrests followed multiple complaints lodged by victims. Acting swiftly, police registered cases against all the accused and sent them to jail. Officials confirmed that this action is part of a broader drive to safeguard pilgrims’ interests, ensure their convenience, and maintain law and order in Puri.
Authorities have urged visitors to remain alert and verify the authenticity of guides before availing their services. Police are also intensifying efforts to track and arrest other fake guides operating in the city, aiming to make the Srimandir pilgrimage a safe and peaceful experience for all devotees.
