Naveen Patnaik declares he will lead BJD in 2029 elections, ends succession speculation
Bhubaneswar, June 25: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president Naveen Patnaik on Thursday firmly stated that he will continue to lead the party in the 2029 general elections, putting an end to speculation about a possible leadership transition within the regional outfit.
The clarification came shortly after former IAS officer Sujata Rout Karthikeyan formally joined the Biju Janata Dal at Sankha Bhawan, the party’s headquarters in Bhubaneswar. Her induction had triggered widespread discussions in political circles, with some observers speculating that she could emerge as the party’s future face ahead of the 2029 elections.
Addressing mediapersons after the induction ceremony, Naveen Patnaik dismissed such rumours and reiterated his commitment to leading the BJD in the next electoral battle.
“I would like to repeat again for the information of the media and all other people that of course I will be leading Biju Janata Dal in the next election. I want to make it very clear,” Patnaik said.
Earlier in the day, the veteran leader chaired a meeting of senior party leaders and officially welcomed Sujata Karthikeyan into the party fold. Praising her administrative experience, he noted that she had served in several important positions during her career as an IAS officer, particularly in roles connected with women’s welfare and development.
Expressing confidence in her future contribution, Patnaik said she would gradually adapt to her new political responsibilities and work for the welfare of people, especially women.
The development comes as the BJD is focused on strengthening its organisation and rebuilding momentum following its setback in the 2024 Assembly elections. Patnaik’s statement is being viewed as a clear signal that he remains firmly at the helm of the party and intends to guide its future political strategy.
