BJD protests in Balasore demanding justice for Soumyasri Bisi in harassment case

Bhubaneswar, July 14: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Monday staged a strong protest in front of Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore, seeking justice for Soumyasri Bisi, a student who suffered critical burn injuries after allegedly attempting self-immolation due to prolonged harassment by a senior lecturer of the institution.
Soumyasri, who reportedly suffered 90-95% burn injuries, is currently battling for her life at AIIMS Bhubaneswar. BJD workers, along with local supporters, took out a rally to the college premises where they burned effigies of Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, and Balasore MP Pratap Sarangi. The party held them responsible for failing to act on Soumyasri’s complaints.
Raising slogans against the government, the BJD demanded the immediate resignation of the Chief Minister and the Higher Education Minister. They also called for a CBI probe into the incident, alleging negligence and inaction on the part of both college authorities and the state government.
Soumyasri had allegedly been harassed by Assistant Professor Samir Ranjan Sahu. Despite repeated complaints to the principal and local administration, no action was taken, forcing her to take the extreme step.
