Odisha Law Minister defends Governor-designate Braj Mohan Ram over BJP remark
Bhubaneswar, Oct 16: Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan on Friday defended Governor-designate Braj Mohan Ram over his controversial remark that he would “work to strengthen the BJP” after assuming office, suggesting that the statement may have been a slip of the tongue.
Responding to questions from reporters, Harichandan said Ram had been associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for decades and might have uttered the words unintentionally. He urged the Opposition to wait until Ram formally assumes office before questioning his impartiality.
“It could be a slip of the tongue. He might not have given any thought before uttering those words. As he worked for decades for the party, the words might have slipped from his tongue. He did not mean it,” Harichandan said.
The minister criticised the Opposition for raising concerns before Ram had taken charge. He said his conduct and discharge of constitutional responsibilities should be assessed after he assumes office.
“If there are any deficiencies, the Opposition can raise questions then, not now over what slipped from his mouth,” he added. Ram’s remarks, made to a news agency in Ranchi following the announcement of his appointment, triggered a political controversy in Odisha.
The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) expressed shock, asserting that a governor must remain above party politics. The Congress also condemned the statement and demanded Ram’s recall, questioning his suitability for the constitutional post.
The controversy has placed Ram’s impartiality under scrutiny ahead of his scheduled oath-taking on October 18.
