Sunita Biswal joins Congress ahead of Rahul Gandhi’s Odisha visit, quits BJD

Bhubaneswar, July 10: In a significant political development ahead of Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Odisha on July 11, Sunita Biswal, daughter of former Chief Minister Hemanand Biswal, officially joined the Congress party.
Her induction into the party took place at the Congress Bhawan in Bhubaneswar in the presence of Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Bhakta Charan Das, senior leader Jaydev Jena, and other prominent Congress members.
Sunita’s move comes just a day after she resigned from the primary membership of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), citing personal reasons. She had submitted her resignation to BJD president Naveen Patnaik. Notably, she had contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Sundargarh on a BJD ticket, where she polled around 2.77 lakh votes but lost to the BJP.
Her return to the Congress fold—her father’s party—has reignited political speculation, especially with the high-profile visit of Rahul Gandhi on the horizon. Although she had earlier denied plans to join Congress, her latest move suggests a strategic shift ahead of future electoral contests, possibly with an eye on the 2029 elections.
