Bhubaneswar, July 28: The Odisha Water Resources Department on Tuesday issued a major flood alert for the Baitarani River, warning that water levels are expected to rise significantly by the evening following incessant rainfall across north Odisha over the past 24 hours. Officials said the Salandi and Jalaka rivers are also witnessing a rapid rise in water levels, increasing the possibility of flooding in several low-lying areas.

Addressing a press conference, Chief Engineer Dillip Rout said the Baitarani River is likely to witness a high flood situation later in the day. Although the river's water level at Akhuapada had not crossed the danger mark by Tuesday afternoon, it was expected to do so by evening if the inflow continues.

He warned that the rising river may affect Dharmasala, Dasarathpur and Chandbali areas, where extensive agricultural land could be submerged. However, officials expect the water level to begin receding within 24 hours after reaching its peak.

The Chief Engineer said the Water Resources Department, in coordination with district administrations, is closely monitoring the evolving situation. Preparations have been made for the evacuation of residents from vulnerable locations if the situation worsens.

Meanwhile, the Jalaka River near Makhnai Bridge is also expected to cross the danger mark, with its water level likely to reach between 6.8 and 7 metres by evening. Water released from upstream reservoirs is expected to aggravate waterlogging in several low-lying areas of Bhadrak district.

The flood alert comes after cloudburst-like rainfall battered parts of north Odisha. According to departmental data, Balasore town recorded the state's highest rainfall during the past 24 hours at 246.6 mm. The heavy downpour has inundated several low-lying localities, disrupted normal life, affected road connectivity, and heightened concerns over possible flood-related damage in vulnerable districts.
