BJD stages statewide protests demanding judicial probe into death of Soumyashree and Balanga girl burning case

Bhubaneswar, July 21: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Monday staged statewide protests at the offices of the Revenue Divisional Commissioners (RDCs) in Cuttack, Berhampur, and Sambalpur, demanding a judicial inquiry into the mysterious death of FM College student Soumyashree Bisi and the shocking Balanga minor girl burning case.
Party workers, led by senior BJD leaders, raised slogans condemning the rising atrocities against women in Odisha. Addressing the protest in Cuttack, BJD Vice President Debi Prasad Mishra expressed outrage over the deteriorating law and order situation, stating that women are unsafe in public spaces, college campuses, and even tourist destinations. He cited data indicating that 15 rapes are reported daily in the state and criticized the government for remaining in “celebratory mode” despite rising crimes.
Leader of Opposition Prasanna Acharya, who led the protest in Sambalpur, said, “The law and order machinery has collapsed. This is not just political outrage, but public anger.”
At Berhampur, BJD’s Sanjay Kumar Das Burma demanded a judicial probe and warned that the party would gherao the Assembly if the government failed to act. The protests mark a significant escalation in the BJD’s campaign for justice.
