New Delhi, September 5: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called upon teachers to take a broader role in shaping students’ lives by helping them stay away from drugs and encouraging healthier habits, including reduced screen time.

Addressing winners of the National Teachers Awards 2026 ahead of Teachers’ Day, Modi emphasised that the responsibilities of teachers extend beyond classroom teaching and academic performance. He urged educators to develop a closer understanding of their students, observe changes in their behaviour and provide guidance whenever they encounter difficulties.

The Prime Minister expressed concern over the growing influence of digital devices on children and encouraged teachers to discuss excessive mobile phone and screen use with parents. He suggested that educators should remain aware of how much time students spend on their devices, particularly at night.

Modi encouraged schools and families to motivate children to spend more time participating in outdoor games, sports and creative pursuits. Such activities, he said, can help children develop interests outside the digital world and contribute to their overall growth.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the need for stronger awareness about the dangers of drug abuse among young people. He called on teachers to educate students about the harmful consequences of drugs and help create an environment where children feel comfortable discussing their concerns.

According to Modi, teachers are in a unique position to identify behavioural changes among students because of their regular interaction with them. He encouraged educators to look beyond textbooks and examinations and pay attention to students’ emotional, social and personal development.

The Prime Minister noted that changes in family structures have also increased the importance of teachers in children’s lives. With joint-family arrangements becoming less common in many parts of the country, schools and teachers can provide children with additional guidance, support and mentorship.

Modi also stressed the importance of making education more engaging and connected to everyday life. He urged teachers to nurture curiosity, creativity and confidence among students instead of focusing exclusively on academic results.

A total of 82 teachers and educators were selected for the National Teachers Awards this year. The awardees included educators from schools, higher education institutions, polytechnics and skill-training institutions. During their interaction with the Prime Minister, the recipients shared their experiences and innovative approaches to teaching.

The Prime Minister praised the educators for their contribution to the country’s education system and encouraged them to continue experimenting with new teaching methods. He also highlighted the importance of giving children opportunities to explore their interests and develop skills beyond conventional academics.

Modi’s message on Teachers’ Day placed renewed emphasis on the role of educators as mentors and guides. His appeal to tackle drug abuse and excessive screen use reflects the growing need for schools, parents and communities to work together to create a healthier environment for children.

Teachers’ Day is observed in India every year on September 5 to commemorate the birth anniversary of former President and renowned educationist Dr S. Radhakrishnan.
