Low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal likely to bring heavy rainfall in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Aug 26: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday confirmed the formation of a low-pressure area over the Gangetic West Bengal valley and adjoining Bangladesh region under the influence of an active cyclonic circulation. The system is expected to move in a west-northwest direction towards Jharkhand within the next 24 hours, raising the likelihood of heavy rainfall activity in eastern India.
According to the IMD, this development will bring widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy showers in several districts of Odisha over the coming days. The state has already been experiencing intermittent showers, and the current weather pattern indicates that the rainy spell may continue for at least the next seven days.
IMD scientist Umasankar Das also confirmed the situation, noting on his official X handle: “A low pressure area has been formed due to an active cyclonic circulation. The system, located over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh, is moving west-northwest towards Jharkhand.”
The weather office has advised district administrations to remain alert, as continuous rainfall could trigger waterlogging, localized flooding, and disruption of agricultural activities in low-lying areas.
