Odisha flood situation remains critical, rivers flowing above danger mark

Bhubaneswar, Aug 25: The Water Resources Department issued a fresh flood bulletin at 10 am, warning that the flood situation in Balasore, Bhadrak, and Jajpur remains critical, with both Subarnarekha and Baitarani rivers flowing above danger levels.
At Akhuapada, the Baitarani River has been recorded at 18.96 meters, crossing the danger mark of 18.33 meters. Though the level shows a steady trend, officials expect a gradual receding in the coming hours.
A major concern emerged after a breach was reported in the right embankment of the Kani River at Mallikapur under Dasarathpur block early Monday. ODRAF teams have been deployed, and restoration will commence once water levels ease.
Engineer-in-Chief Chandra Sekhar Padhi informed that 12 sluice gates of Hirakud Dam have been opened, discharging 2.22 lakh cusecs of water against an inflow of 2.11 lakh cusecs. Similarly, Rengali Dam is 90% full, with two gates opened to regulate outflow.
The Subarnarekha continues to swell upstream, while levels downstream are slowly declining. The Central Water Commission has predicted a temporary fall, followed by another possible rise. District administrations are on high alert, coordinating evacuation and relief operations.
