Flood situation along Subarnarekha River improves, water level recedes below danger mark

Bhubaneswar, Aug 26: The flood situation along the Subarnarekha River is gradually easing, with the water level at Rajghat receding to 10.7 meters, Engineer-in-Chief of the State Water Resources Department Chandra Sekhar Padhi informed on Tuesday.
Padhi stated that the water level is likely to fall below the danger mark by Tuesday evening and may touch the warning level by midnight or early Wednesday, offering relief to the affected areas. He attributed the improvement to the absence of rainfall in the river’s upper catchments on Monday. “No rain in the catchment area is a good sign and has helped in reducing the water level,” he said.
Other vulnerable points such as Jamsholaghat and Akhuapada are also witnessing steady receding of water, with Akhuapada already falling below the danger mark. Rehabilitation and repair works in flood-hit areas are scheduled to begin from Wednesday.
While some rainfall was reported in the Vamsadhara, Nagavali, and Kolab river basins, no rain occurred in the catchments of major rivers including the Budhabalanga, Baitarani, Brahmani, Mahanadi, and Rushikulya, keeping their water levels stable.
Meanwhile, at Hirakud Dam, where 12 gates were opened to release excess water, officials have now closed four gates, discharging water through eight gates as inflows subside.
