Former Odisha Deputy Speaker Bibhuti Bhusan Singh Mardaraj passes away at 70

Bhubaneswar, Aug 7: Veteran politician and former Deputy Speaker of the Odisha Legislative Assembly, Bibhuti Bhusan Singh Mardaraj, passed away late Wednesday night while undergoing treatment for cardiac complications at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar. He was 70.
Mardaraj, the Raja of Khandpara Gada, was a towering figure in Odisha politics and had a distinguished political career spanning several decades. He was elected to the Odisha Legislative Assembly three times—in 1980, 1985, and 1995—and held key positions, including that of Minister and Deputy Speaker. A stalwart of the Congress party, he was known for his dignified leadership, deep knowledge of legislative processes, and commitment to public service.
His demise has left a deep void in the political landscape of the state. Condolences have poured in from across party lines, with leaders recalling his contributions to governance, legislative affairs, and constituency development.
Many have described him as a principled leader who upheld democratic values with grace and integrity. His legacy will be remembered by colleagues, constituents, and future generations.
The final rites will be conducted with full state honours in Khandpara, his ancestral hometown, where preparations are underway for his last journey.
