Odisha to experience temperature rise from May 8; IMD issues thunderstorm alerts

Bhubaneswar, May 6: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a significant rise in temperatures across Odisha, with an increase of 2 to 4 degrees Celsius expected from May 8 onwards. Several districts are likely to experience scorching heat, with maximum temperatures touching 40°C to 41°C over the coming days.
According to the IMD’s regional weather office, cities such as Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Boudh, Balangir, and Titlagarh are projected to record temperatures of 40°C by May 8. By May 9, temperatures are expected to rise further, reaching around 41°C in these areas, as well as in Deogarh, Nayagarh, and Angul.
Interestingly, some areas of Odisha witnessed a temporary relief over the past 24 hours, with temperatures dropping by 2 to 6 degrees Celsius in various parts.
Meanwhile, a yellow warning has been issued for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph in districts like Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, and Koraput. Between May 6 and 7, thunderstorms with stronger winds (40–50 kmph) are expected in Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, and adjoining regions.
