Cyclonic storm likely to form over Bay of Bengal, Odisha on alert

Bhubaneswar, Oct 16: National and international weather models predict the formation of a low-pressure system over the central Bay of Bengal on October 21, which could intensify into a depression by October 22 and a cyclonic storm by October 23.
The system is expected to move northwestward, potentially heading toward Odisha’s coast, though forecasts vary regarding its intensity.
According to the Global Forecast System (GFS) model, the storm may develop into a severe cyclonic storm over the sea but is likely to weaken before making landfall in Odisha, causing minimal wind impact. However, heavy to very heavy rainfall along the coastal regions is expected.
Weather expert Sharat Sahu explained that the current low-pressure system is already bringing rain to Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and southern Andhra Pradesh. Odisha may experience light to moderate rainfall between October 16 and 18. Sahu, however, warned that it is too early to confirm the formation of a cyclone post-October 20.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that a depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal is moving west-northwest at 12 kmph. It is currently located about 360 km east-southeast of Chennai, 390 km east of Puducherry, and 450 km southeast of Nellore, Andhra Pradesh.
