Potato shortage in Odisha to end soon with incoming shipments: Minister
Bhubaneswar, Aug 8: Odisha Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra on Thursday said that the potato crisis in the state is expected to be resolved within a few days with fresh supplies arriving from West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.
"We will soon receive adequate supplies of potatoes from West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh, which will help ease the current shortage in Odisha. This will also lead to a drop in potato prices," Patra stated. He further mentioned that traders have been instructed to prepare for the incoming supplies and to ensure that potato prices remain stable.
In a positive development, five trucks loaded with potatoes arrived at the Aiginia potato godown on Thursday, providing some relief to consumers.
Previously, the West Bengal police had been stopping trucks transporting potatoes at a temporary checkpoint in Belda, 60 km from the Sonakania Gate. However, this obstacle appears to have been overcome with the latest arrivals.
Although the current supply may not be sufficient to meet all demands, traders are hopeful that the continued shipments from West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh will stabilize the market. Traders noted that while the potatoes from Uttar Pradesh have yet to arrive, the last shipment was received four days ago.
