Odisha election crackdown: Rs 118.65 cr in cash and items seized, says CEO Nikunj Dhal

Bhubaneswar, April 18: State Election Officer Nikunj Bihari Dhal announced that elections for 28 Assembly seats in the Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Koraput, and Berhampur parliamentary regions will take place on May 13. Dhal highlighted a significant presence of women voters across these four parliamentary constituencies, with a total of 6,284,649 eligible voters expected to participate in the electoral process.
To ensure fair conduct, the Chief Electoral Officer has deployed three observers to oversee the entire election procedure, with a specific focus on monitoring candidate expenses. Dhal emphasized their commitment to addressing any complaints promptly, revealing that out of 587 complaints received through the C Vigil app pertaining to these parliamentary constituencies, 582 have already been resolved. Most grievances centered around issues like posters and banners.
Furthermore, since the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct, authorities have seized various items amounting to Rs 118.65 crore. This includes cash totaling Rs 2.7 crore, drugs valued at Rs 18.19 crore, marijuana and brown sugar amounting to Rs 43.69 crore, and gold worth Rs 7.17 crore.
