Odisha's first Haplo bone marrow transplant patient dies

Cuttack, Jan 19: The first recipient of a Haplo bone marrow transplant in Odisha, Subranngshu Sahoo, passed away during his ongoing treatment at Cuttack's SCB Medical College and Hospital on Thursday.
The 19-year-old resident of Khurda district had battled blood cancer since 2019, and the medical team at SCB Medical College and Hospital had initially received accolades for the successful transplantation.
Despite initial signs of improvement in Sahoo's health, doctors conveyed the unfortunate news of his demise on Friday morning. Sahoo, hailing from the Kantamalim area in Khordha district, had previously undergone treatment at the same medical facility, successfully returning home after being declared cured. However, a relapse in 2022 prompted another round of medical attention.
Facing the advanced stage of cancer and having completed chemotherapy, the family had lost hope for Sahoo's recovery. Yet, a ray of hope emerged through a groundbreaking bone marrow transplant surgery that offered him a renewed chance at life.
Sahoo's sister, Sanjivini, and younger brother played crucial roles in making the rare surgery possible by donating stem cells for the bone marrow transplant.
Addressing the media on Friday morning, Dr. Sudhanshu Shekhar Mishra, the superintendent of SCB Medical College and Hospital, expressed, "The patient was on a path to recovery, and had he endured for another 4-5 days, his body would have accepted the stem cells. Unfortunately, he passed away suddenly this morning. We have initiated a comprehensive review of the circumstances leading to the patient's demise."
