Bhubaneswar, Sept 8: Senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader and Nuapada MLA Rajendra Dholakia passed away on Monday at the age of 69 while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Chennai. His demise has left a deep void in Odisha politics, particularly in the western region where he was considered a strong voice.
Born on November 20, 1956, Dholakia entered politics as an independent candidate, winning his first Assembly election from Nuapada in 2004. He later joined the BJD and went on to secure three more terms, in 2009, 2019, and 2024, steadily establishing himself as one of the most influential leaders of the party in western Odisha. Known for his grassroots connect and straightforward approach, he played a key role in strengthening BJD’s organisational base in the region.
According to party sources, Dholakia’s mortal remains will be brought to Bhubaneswar on Tuesday and placed at the Odisha Legislative Assembly for leaders, colleagues, and the public to pay their final respects.
Condolences have poured in from across party lines, with political leaders remembering him as a committed legislator and a dedicated representative of the people of Nuapada.
