Tusker found dead in Deogarh’s Riamal forest range, probe launched

Bhubaneswar, Sept 12: In yet another incident highlighting concerns over elephant safety, the carcass of a tusker was discovered in Chiragunikudar village under the Riamal forest range of Deogarh district. The shocking discovery has raised alarm among locals and wildlife officials, given the recurring reports of elephant deaths in the region.
On receiving information, a forest team led by Riamal Ranger Niranjan Dharua rushed to the spot and began preliminary investigation. Deogarh DFO Rashmi G and ACF Swadhinata Sahani also reached the site to personally supervise the inquiry.
A joint team comprising experts from the Forest Department, the Electricity Department, and a scientific squad has been deployed to determine the cause of death. Authorities said the exact reason is still uncertain and will only be confirmed after post-mortem and scientific analysis. Officials are examining whether the tusker died due to electrocution, disease, or any other factor.
This development comes close on the heels of several elephant-related tragedies in the state, underscoring the urgent need for stronger measures to prevent such incidents and ensure better protection of wild elephants.
