Mother apprehended in connection with twins' well tragedy" in Angul

Angul, Jan 18: On Thursday, the police arrested Tapaswini Sahu, the mother of the twins discovered lifeless on Wednesday in a well behind their residence in Basala village (Mundadhipa Sahi) within the jurisdiction of Bantala police in Angul district.
Following a written complaint lodged on January 17 by Sunil Kumar Sahu of Basala village, accusing an unidentified perpetrator of murdering his three-month-old twins—a boy and a girl—by depositing them in a well behind their house while they were asleep, Bantala police initiated an investigation. The police, aided by a scientific team, discovered during the probe that the mother of the deceased children was the prime suspect.
Ramakanta Mahalik, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Angul, briefed reporters on Thursday, stating that the complainant had been married to Tapaswini for a decade, and despite their prolonged efforts to conceive, they resorted to in vitro fertilization (IVF), resulting in the birth of the twins. The infants were three months and seven days old at the time of the tragic incident.
The SDPO explained that Tapaswini had recently developed mental health issues and faced other health complications. Her family had observed these changes over a few days, and the situation worsened in the absence of family members. In a distressing turn of events, she allegedly dumped the twins in the well, leading to their untimely demise. Based on preliminary evidence, the police apprehended the accused mother, and after completing the necessary formalities, she will be presented before the court.
