Minister assures best medical care for brave student injured in Balasore college tragedy

Bhubaneswar, July 16: In the aftermath of a tragic incident at Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore, Odisha’s Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling has assured that the state government is taking all necessary steps to provide advanced medical care to student Jyotiprakash Biswal. Jyotiprakash sustained critical burn injuries while bravely attempting to save his fellow student Soumyashree Bisi, who set herself ablaze in protest over alleged harassment and administrative inaction.
Soumyashree, who had been undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, succumbed to her injuries late Monday night, sparking widespread outrage and calls for accountability from the college administration. The incident has triggered a wave of concern over the handling of harassment complaints and student safety in educational institutions.
Jyotiprakash is currently being treated in the Burn Unit of SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack. Minister Mahaling, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), shared that he personally spoke with Jyotiprakash’s mother to offer support and ensure proper care is being provided.
"The government is committed to Jyotiprakash’s full recovery. Special medical instructions have been issued," the minister said, expressing prayers for the student’s speedy healing.
