Odisha braces for inclement weather: IMD issues yellow alert for thunderstorms and heavy rain

Bhubaneswar, June 10: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Warning for several districts across Odisha, forecasting adverse weather conditions for tomorrow, June 11th. Residents are advised to prepare for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty surface winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph, and the possibility of heavy rainfall at isolated locations.
According to the IMD's mid-day weather bulletin, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are widely expected across South Odisha, with a few places in North Odisha also likely to experience similar conditions. Specifically, districts like Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Nuapada, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal are under a Yellow Warning for thunderstorms with lightning and strong gusty winds, along with potential heavy downpours.
Furthermore, other central and coastal districts, including Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Balangir, Koraput, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, and Jagatsinghpur, are also very likely to witness thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds ranging from 40-50 kmph. Several other districts will experience winds of 30-40 kmph.
Adding to the concerns, the IMD has also warned of hot and humid weather conditions persisting in coastal districts such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, and Jagatsinghpur. Looking ahead, a Yellow Warning for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds (30–40 kmph) remains in effect for various districts of Odisha from June 12th to June 17th, indicating a prolonged period of unsettled weather. Despite these conditions, the IMD projects no significant change in maximum daytime temperatures across the state for the next six to seven days.
