Odisha scraps 2,868 old vehicles under state’s scrap policy in three years

Bhubaneswar. March 27: A total of 2,868 vehicles, aged between 15 and 20 years, have been scrapped under Odisha’s vehicle scrap policy over the past three years, Commerce and Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena informed the State Assembly on Thursday.
Responding to a query from Salipur MLA Prasanta Behera, Minister Jena cited data from the Metal Scrap Trade Corporation Limited (MSTC), revealing that 2,049 government vehicles and 819 private vehicles were scrapped under the policy. The initiative aligns with the state’s efforts to phase out old, polluting vehicles and promote cleaner transportation.
The policy aims to reduce vehicular emissions, improve road safety, and encourage the adoption of newer, fuel-efficient vehicles. Authorities have been urging vehicle owners to comply with the scrappage norms, offering incentives for voluntary scrapping.
With increasing concerns over air pollution and road congestion, the government is likely to intensify its efforts in enforcing the policy. More vehicles are expected to be phased out in the coming years as Odisha strengthens its commitment to sustainable transport solutions.
