Odisha Cabinet approves block-level stadiums to boost grassroots sports

Bhubaneswar, Feb 8: In a significant move to strengthen sports infrastructure at the grassroots level, the Odisha Cabinet on Friday approved a groundbreaking project to construct block-level stadiums in all 314 blocks of the state. This ambitious initiative underscores the government's commitment to fostering a strong sports culture while promoting health and wellness across Odisha.
According to an official release, the project aims to bridge the gap in rural sports infrastructure, particularly in underdeveloped block-level facilities. These disparities have long hindered the state's rapid sports growth. By providing improved facilities, the government seeks to nurture local talent, enhance opportunities for athletes, and host grassroots sports competitions. The project will focus on core sports disciplines where Odisha shows significant potential.
Beyond fostering competitive sports, these stadiums will encourage youth participation in physical activities, contributing to their mental and physical well-being. Odisha, recognized as a rising sports hub in India, is taking a major stride in creating a vibrant sports ecosystem.
Each Block-Level Stadium will be developed on 8-10 acres of land, featuring a football/cricket field, a clay athletic track with throw and jump areas, volleyball, kho-kho, and kabaddi courts, indoor halls for badminton and table tennis, along with a common facility center. This initiative is set to revolutionize rural sports, inspiring more youth to take up sports and paving the way for future champions.
