Nine-day-old girl rescued amid child sale allegations in Rayagada

Bhubaneswar, Nov 20: A nine-day-old baby girl, allegedly handed over by her parents for ₹20,000 in Odisha’s Rayagada district, was rescued from Andhra Pradesh today.
Born on November 3, the newborn was reportedly handed over to a childless couple from Pedapenki village in Manyam district, Andhra Pradesh. Her parents, Rahul Dhanabadi and Kumud Ganta, residents of Nuapada slum under Chandili police station limits, allegedly took this step due to extreme poverty.
Following reports of the incident, the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and the Women and Child Development (WCD) Department intervened and launched a probe. The baby was recovered and is now under the care of authorities.
However, the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights dismissed claims of "child sale." Commission member Satyapriya Pradhan clarified, “The parents did not sell the child but handed her over for adoption due to financial constraints.”
Authorities are now working to ensure the baby’s safety and evaluate the family’s condition for further action.
