Odisha Assembly adjourned twice amid uproar over Ganjam hooch tragedy

Bhubaneswar, Aug 21: The Odisha Legislative Assembly was adjourned twice on Wednesday—first until 11:30 am and then until 4:00 pm—due to chaos in the House over the hooch tragedy in Ganjam district that occurred on Tuesday.
As soon as the Assembly session began, Opposition MLAs rushed to the well of the House, demanding an RDC (Revenue Divisional Commissioner) probe into the liquor tragedy, which claimed one life and left 15 others ill. Congress MLAs also demanded the protection of the rights of marginalized sections of society.
Unable to restore order, Speaker Surama Padhy adjourned the proceedings until 11:30 am. When the House reconvened at 11:30 am, the disorder continued, prompting her to adjourn the session again until 4:00 pm.
Today marks the second day of the second phase of the Assembly Budget session. The Assembly was scheduled to discuss issues related to Agriculture and Farmer’s Empowerment, Food Supply and Rural Welfare, Energy, Cooperatives, Fisheries and Livestock, Textile Industry, Handicrafts, MSME, and Science and Technology departments.
