Elephant calf rescued after four-hour operation in Betanati

Bhubaneswar, July 3: An elephant calf was successfully rescued from a canal after a dramatic rescue operation in Asanbani village, Betanati range, Mayurbhanj district, on Wednesday.
Sources reported that the calf had fallen into the canal and, despite the mother elephant's efforts to rescue her baby, it remained trapped. When the mother elephant's attempts failed, she began roaring, alerting villagers, the Gajasathi team, and forest officials.
The Forest Department officials waited for the mother elephant to move away from the calf before starting the rescue operation. During the process, the mother elephant became aggressive and attacked the JCB machine used in the rescue.
Despite the challenges, the rescue team persisted and successfully freed the calf after a four-hour effort. Once reunited, the mother and baby elephant retreated into the nearby forest.
The elephants had entered the village searching for food when the incident occurred. The rescue operation was conducted with great care to ensure the calf's safety.
