Vision loss complaints lead to clinic shutdown in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, June 27: On Thursday, police sealed a private clinic in Angul after 13 individuals reportedly experienced partial vision loss following cataract surgery performed there last week.
According to sources, 26 people underwent cataract surgery on June 20. Within 24 hours, 13 of them complained of severe eye pain, headaches, and vision loss. As their conditions worsened, they were transferred to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR). Eleven patients have since been discharged, while two elderly individuals remain under treatment.
The incident caused unrest at the clinic, with relatives of the affected patients alleging that faulty surgeries led to the vision issues. In response, police, accompanied by the district administration, sealed the eye clinic.
“An investigation is underway, and stringent action will be taken against those found guilty,” stated Anugul Chief District Medical Officer Shivashankar Mohanty.
A preliminary investigation suggests that the issue may stem from post-cataract surgery infections, likely due to improperly sterilized surgical tools.
