IMD predicts severe storm headed for Bangladesh and Bengal

Bhubaneswar, May 23: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted the potential formation of a cyclone over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to move towards the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal.
According to a tweet from the IMD's regional center, the low-pressure area that was over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal has moved northeastwards. As of 8:30 AM IST on May 23, 2024, it has intensified into a well-marked low-pressure area over the west-central and adjoining south Bay of Bengal. This system is predicted to continue moving northeastwards and develop into a depression over the central Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 24. It is then likely to strengthen into a cyclonic storm over the east-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 25.
The tweet also indicated that the system is expected to move northwards and approach the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal by the evening of May 26 as a severe cyclonic storm.
IMD Bhubaneswar scientist Umashankar Dash confirmed this forecast on his social media account, reiterating that the system will likely become a depression by May 24 and intensify into a cyclonic storm by May 25 as it continues its northeastward trajectory.
