IMD predicts low pressure area to form over Southwest Bay of Bengal by May 22

Bhubaneswar, May 20: A low pressure area is expected to form over the Southwest Bay of Bengal around May 22 according to the latest reports from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).
Initially, this system is likely to move northeastwards and then intensify into a depression over the central Bay of Bengal by the morning of May 24.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall is anticipated in North Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal on May 24 and 25, with widespread rainfall expected in many areas.
Fishermen are advised to avoid venturing into the central Bay of Bengal starting May 23, and the North Bay of Bengal from May 24 onwards. Those already at sea are urged to return to the coast by May 23.
The Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has alerted district collectors about the potential low pressure area, as forecasted by the IMD on Sunday.
The SRC's advisory states, "According to the mid-day weather bulletin issued by the IMD at 13:30 hours today, a low pressure area is likely to form over the southwest Bay of Bengal around May 22. It is expected to move northeastwards and intensify into a depression over the central Bay of Bengal by May 24."
"Light to moderate rain and thundershowers are very likely to occur in one or two places across Odisha," the advisory continued.
"The system should be closely monitored, and district administrations should be on alert and prepared for any eventualities," the advisory concluded.
