Heat wave grips Odisha, no respite in sight: IMD

Bhubaneswar, April 6: Amidst scorching temperatures, Odisha is bracing for prolonged heat wave conditions, with little relief in sight, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar cautioned on Saturday that certain pockets of the state are expected to continue experiencing heat wave conditions.
Over the next 24 hours, heat wave conditions are anticipated to persist in various districts including Cuttack, Bhadrak, Nayagarh, Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi, Boudh, Malkanagiri, Nuapada, Nabarangpur, Kandhamal, and Balangir.
Additionally, warm night conditions are forecasted to persist in districts such as Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Sundargarh, Kandhamal, Boudh, and Nayagarh. Similarly, hot and humid weather is expected to persist in Gajapati, Balasore, Khurda, and Puri districts.
The temperature soared to 42 degrees Celsius in ten locations across Odisha, with the capital city Bhubaneswar experiencing the highest temperature on Friday.
Bhubaneswar recorded a scorching 43.5 degrees Celsius, ranking as the sixth hottest city in Asia on that day. Other areas experiencing high temperatures include Paralakhemundi with 42.6 degrees Celsius, Talcher with 42.4 degrees Celsius, and Malkangiri and Boudh with 42.2 degrees Celsius. Furthermore, Angul recorded 42.1 degrees Celsius, while Jharsuguda, Balangir, Titlagarh, and Nayagarh reached 42 degrees Celsius.
Attributed to prevailing Northwesterly/Westerly dry air and intense solar insolation, the IMD predicts that maximum temperatures are likely to exceed 40°C in many parts of the state, with some districts experiencing temperatures above normal by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius.
