Odisha Police crack down on job scammers, 92 passports seized

Berhampur, Feb 19: The Goasinuagaon police in Odisha's Berhampur district apprehended three individuals on charges of swindling job seekers out of significant sums of money under the guise of securing employment opportunities in Kenya. Along with the arrests, authorities confiscated 92 passports, applicant data, financial transaction records, and 20 tourist visas issued by The Republic of Kenya.
The arrested suspects were identified as Chinapani Mohan Reddy (48) from Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, Potanapalli Simanchalam (40) from Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh, and Tadela Dhilleswara Rao (35) also from Srikakulam.
As per police reports, a complaint was lodged by Prabhat Dalai (35) at the Gosaninuagaon police station on February 5, 2024. The complaint alleged that Chandra Mohan Reddy of Kutharisingh village, under Golanthara police jurisdiction, had extorted Rs 9,70,000 from 20 individuals, along with 92 original passports, promising them lucrative positions in Kenya. Reddy demanded an upfront payment of Rs 25,000 from each candidate for the passports, subsequently providing them with offer letters purportedly from Intex Company. However, after a waiting period of 20 days, only tourist visas were provided, leaving the victims stranded.
Upon investigation, it was revealed that the accused deceived victims by falsely guaranteeing employment opportunities in various countries, procuring passports and money from them. Instead of arranging employment visas, the perpetrators arranged tourist visas with the help of their associates, causing financial loss to the victims. The authenticity of the company issuing offer letters is currently under scrutiny by authorities.
