Odisha Assembly reveals criminal cases against former and sitting MPs, MLAs

Bhubaneswar, March 10: A recent disclosure in the Odisha Assembly has shed light on the number of criminal cases registered against both former and sitting MPs and MLAs in the state. The revelation has sparked fresh discussions on the accountability and integrity of elected representatives.
According to a written response by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Mahaling to a question raised by Opposition Deputy Leader Prasanna Acharya, a total of 22 cases have been registered against former and current MPs, along with 39 criminal cases. The situation appears more alarming for MLAs, as former and sitting legislators are facing 115 cases, with 418 criminal cases filed against them.
Out of these, 384 cases are currently under trial, while trials have been completed in 14 cases. Additionally, 43 cases remain under investigation. Among the total cases, 198 have been classified as politically motivated.
This revelation has intensified demands for stricter laws to ensure transparency in Odisha’s political landscape. Legal experts anticipate further debates on enforcing measures to curb criminal involvement in politics.
