16 deaths reported in Mo Bus accidents; Odisha Minister highlights safety measures
Bhubaneswar, March 11: A total of 375 Mo Buses are currently operational in Bhubaneswar and its surrounding areas, but concerns over road safety persist as 16 people have lost their lives in accidents involving these buses.
This information was shared by Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra in response to a query raised by BJD MLA Ananta Narayan Jena in the Odisha Legislative Assembly.
Addressing concerns over safety features and speed regulations of Mo Buses, the Minister informed that speed governors have been installed to control speed limits. As per government regulations, electric buses operating within city limits are restricted to a maximum speed of 35 km/h, while diesel buses can travel up to 40 km/h. Additionally, 16 Mo Buses that ply on national highways are permitted to run at 50 km/h.
To support families affected by fatal accidents, the government has provided compensation totaling Rs. 2.94 crore since 2019. The state continues to monitor safety measures to prevent further mishaps and ensure passenger security.
