113 drivers arrested after violent clash at Master Canteen
Bhubaneswar, Aug 20: The number of arrests has risen to 113 following the violent face-off between police and members of an online cab and auto drivers’ association at Master Canteen Square in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday.
According to police sources, the drivers were arrested in three phases in connection with alleged assault, vandalism and rioting during the protest. Those arrested have been booked under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 115, 126 and 109, relating to assault, violence, rioting and damage to public property.
Police have so far seized 354 vehicles allegedly used during the illegal road blockade. However, around 60 detained drivers were subsequently released after preliminary verification found no involvement in the violence and officials observed their conduct to be satisfactory.
Kharavel Police have registered seven cases in connection with the incident. Around 15 vehicles, including a Mo Bus and a police van, were reportedly damaged during the confrontation.
The blockade at Master Canteen Square caused severe disruption to traffic and public movement. Following the incident, the Transport Department initiated steps to cancel the permits of vehicles involved in the disruption. Bhubaneswar-1 RTO has issued show-cause notices to registered owners and permit holders, directing them to appear for personal hearings.
Preliminary investigation based on police records, CCTV footage and seizure lists revealed that more than 400 autorickshaws were allegedly used to block the road. Police have identified the vehicles and seized 354 so far. Officials said stringent action would follow against those found involved in the unlawful protest.
