IMD issues yellow and orange warnings as rain activity to intensify in Odisha
Bhubaneswar, Aug 20: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rain and thundershowers at several places across Odisha over the coming days, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall likely in northern and western districts.
In its midday bulletin on Thursday, the IMD issued a Yellow Warning for Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph over isolated areas during the next 24 hours.
For Friday, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely at many places, with heavy rainfall possible at one or two locations in Sundargarh, Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are also expected in several districts, including Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh.
The weather office has forecast further rainfall activity on August 22, with isolated heavy rain likely in Baleshwar, Sundargarh, Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj.
On August 23, an Orange Warning has been issued for Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj, where heavy to very heavy rainfall may occur. Heavy rain is also likely in Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Angul and Dhenkanal.
Rainfall activity is expected to continue through August 24-26, particularly over northern districts. However, the IMD said no major change in weather conditions is expected from August 27 to 30.
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon remained weak over Odisha on Thursday. Akhuapada recorded the highest rainfall of 6 cm, followed by Bhandaripokhari with 5 cm. Bhadrak recorded the highest maximum temperature of 35°C, while Boudh registered the lowest minimum temperature of 18.7°C.
