Ruckus in Odisha Assembly: Speaker forced to adjourn House

Bhubaneswar, March 11: The Odisha Legislative Assembly witnessed chaotic scenes on Tuesday as opposition members disrupted proceedings, forcing Speaker Surama Padhy to adjourn the House until 4 PM. The commotion began during the question hour, with members of the Congress and BJD staging intense protests, rushing to the well of the House, and raising slogans.
Tensions escalated when Congress MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati and BJP MLA Jayanarayan Mishra got into a heated verbal exchange, which nearly turned physical. The Speaker initially adjourned the session until noon, but as the uproar continued, she was compelled to extend the adjournment until 4 PM.
The opposition parties were protesting against the alleged rise in crimes against women and the state government’s handling of law and order. Congress legislators climbed onto the reporter’s table, waving placards and shouting slogans, while BJP members countered the allegations, leading to a prolonged argument.
With neither side willing to back down, the situation remained volatile, disrupting Assembly proceedings for several hours. The Speaker’s repeated attempts to restore order went in vain, resulting in the adjournment.
