Bhubaneswar, Sep 23: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday appointed senior leader D Purandeswari as the party’s in-charge for Odisha, with Dr Swadesh Singh named co-in-charge, as part of a wider organisational reshuffle covering 36 states and Union Territories. The appointments, announced by BJP national president Nitin Nabin, take immediate effect.

Purandeswari, a senior BJP leader from Andhra Pradesh, has previously handled organisational responsibilities in Odisha. Her latest appointment comes ahead of the state’s upcoming panchayat and urban local body elections. She will oversee the party’s organisational affairs in Odisha, while Swadesh Singh will assist her as co-in-charge.

The two leaders replace Vijay Pal Singh Tomar and Sushree Lata Usendi, respectively, in the state organisation.

The reshuffle is part of a larger exercise aimed at assigning new organisational responsibilities to senior leaders across the country. Several leaders have been given charge of more than one state. Harish Dwivedi has been assigned Bihar and Karnataka, Smriti Irani Chhattisgarh and Haryana, Satish Poonia Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab, Ram Madhav Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand, and Sunil Bansal Telangana and West Bengal.

In Maharashtra, BJP national vice-president Baijayant Jay Panda has been appointed in-charge, assisted by Amit Malviya, Sadanand Shet Tanawade and Kamaljeet Sehrawat. Vinod Tawde will oversee Uttar Pradesh with four co-in-charges.
