Bhubaneswar, Sep 22: Schools and Anganwadi centres have been closed in several districts of Odisha as a precautionary measure in view of the forecast of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall under the influence of a depression over the Bay of Bengal.

In Ganjam, the district administration has ordered the closure of all government, government-aided and private schools from September 22 to 24. In Jagatsinghpur, all schools and Anganwadi centres will remain closed on September 22 in view of the heavy rainfall forecast.

Similarly, educational institutions and Anganwadi centres in Gajapati will remain closed from September 22 to 24. The order applies to both government and private institutions.

The Khordha district administration has also ordered the closure of all government, government-aided and private schools, along with Anganwadi centres, from September 22 to 24. However, teachers and other staff members will continue to report for duty. The previously scheduled NRTS examination will also be held as planned.

In Koraput, authorities have issued an alert directing teachers not to leave their respective headquarters until September 25, considering the possibility of adverse weather conditions.

The precautionary measures come as the depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a deep depression within the next 24 hours.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is likely to move west-northwestwards towards the north Andhra Pradesh–south Odisha coast and cross between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur during the night of September 23 and early hours of September 24.

Authorities have advised residents to remain alert and follow official weather advisories.
