Jatra Committee urges Law Minister to curb obscenity in performances

Bhubaneswar, Nov 5: The Jatra Committee Mahasangh met with Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan today, urging the implementation of special regulations for Jatra organizations to combat obscenity and vulgarity in performances. The Mahasangh submitted a memorandum protesting plays that promote indecent content, dual-meaning language, and negative societal impacts.
The association emphasized the need for government intervention to regulate Jatra shows and curb indecency. Law Minister Harichandan assured that guidelines would soon be issued to safeguard cultural integrity. He highlighted that obscene dances often lead to disturbances and dissatisfaction among audiences.
“The culture department will tackle the issue of obscenity,” Harichandan stated. “I have advised opera party owners to preserve the sanctity of Odisha’s cultural heritage.”
The minister also announced plans to introduce legislation banning obscene dances in Jatra performances. This decision was welcomed by Opera artists and the Rajya Kalakar Maha Sangh.
Umakant Mishra, Secretary of the Jatra Committee Mahasangh, criticized opera party owners for introducing obscene dance sequences for commercial gains.
