Elderly man dies after self-immolation attempt in Ganjam

Bhubaneswar, July 23: In a heartbreaking incident from Badhiausta village under Patapur Police Station limits in Ganjam district, an elderly man lost his life after attempting self-immolation on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Pitabasa Acharya, a resident of the same village.
According to local sources, Pitabasa allegedly poured kerosene over himself and set himself on fire earlier in the day. Shocked bystanders immediately rushed to his aid and managed to douse the flames, but by then, he had already sustained critical burn injuries.
The locals wasted no time and transported the severely injured man to the Adapada hospital for urgent medical attention. However, upon examination, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The exact reason behind the self-immolation attempt remains unknown, leaving villagers and authorities in shock. Police have initiated an inquiry into the matter to determine the motive behind the extreme step.
The tragic event has cast a pall of gloom over the community, with residents mourning the sudden and painful death of the elderly villager. Further investigations are underway.
