Odisha braces for widespread rainfall, IMD issues orange warnings for several districts
Bhubaneswar, Aug 21: Odisha is likely to experience widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next seven days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing orange warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall in several northern districts.
According to the IMD’s midday bulletin issued on Friday, light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely at a few places across all districts during the next 24 hours. A yellow warning has been issued for thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds of 30-40 kmph at one or two places in 15 districts, including Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh.
On August 22, isolated heavy rainfall is likely in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Kalahandi and Nabarangpur, while rain and thunderstorms are expected in northern and western Odisha. On August 23, heavy rainfall may occur in Sundargarh, Bargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balangir and Kalahandi.
Weather conditions are expected to intensify from August 24. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj, prompting an orange warning. A yellow warning has also been issued for Jajpur, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Angul and Dhenkanal.
On August 25, Mayurbhanj is likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, while Jajpur, Sundargarh, Keonjhar and Balangir may witness heavy rain. Orange warnings have again been issued for Mayurbhanj on August 26 and for Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj on August 27.
The IMD has advised people in the warned districts to remain alert and take necessary precautions during periods of intense rainfall, lightning and gusty winds.
