Paika rebellion not dropped from NCERT textbooks, clarifies Odisha IT Minister Mukesh Mahaling

Bhubaneswar : Odisha Electronics and Information Technology Minister Mukesh Mahaling on Tuesday addressed concerns regarding the alleged omission of the Paika Rebellion from NCERT textbooks. Refuting recent media reports, he clarified that the historic uprising has not been excluded, but will instead be featured in Part 2 of the Class 8 Social Science textbook.
Citing an official press release from the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), Mahaling explained that the newly released textbook, Exploring Society: India and Beyond, is only the first volume of the Class 8 curriculum. The second volume, currently in its final stages of development, is expected to be published by September–October 2025.
According to the NCERT, regional resistance movements, including the Paika Rebellion of Odisha and the Kuka Movement in Punjab, will be covered in the second part.
Taking to social media platform X, Minister Mahaling reiterated that the Paika Rebellion’s historical importance remains fully acknowledged and will be taught in upcoming academic sessions. He urged the public not to believe misleading claims, assuring that Odisha’s revolutionary past will be given due recognition in national education.
