Melanistic tiger safari to open near Similipal Tiger reserve by year-end

Bhubaneswar, July 29: A melanistic tiger safari near Similipal Tiger Reserve in Mayurbhanj district, Odisha, has received approval and is set to start by the end of the year, according to Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) Susanta Nanda.
The Odisha government had announced in January 2024 the establishment of the world's first Melanistic Tiger Safari near Similipal Tiger Reserve. This safari will be located in Similipal National Park, specifically in a 200-hectare area adjacent to NH-18.
Of this, 100 hectares will serve as the display area, while the remaining land will be used for veterinary care facilities, including a rescue center, staff infrastructure, and visitor amenities. The site is approximately 15 km from Similipal Tiger Reserve, maintaining a similar landscape.
Similipal Tiger Reserve is globally unique as the only wild habitat for melanistic tigers. The 2018 All India Tiger Estimation Report by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) confirmed the presence of melanistic tigers exclusively in Similipal.
The safari will house surplus tigers from Nandankanan Zoo and rescued or orphaned tigers unfit for the wild but suitable for display, within an open enclosure. This initiative is expected to boost wildlife tourism in Odisha, showcasing the state's dedication to preserving its unique biodiversity.
