Two robbers injured in police encounter after Talcher jewellery heist; four gang members nabbed
Bhubaneswar, June 18: In a major breakthrough against organised crime, Talcher police carried out a successful anti-crime operation in Angul district, injuring two alleged robbers and arresting four members of a gang involved in a high-value jewellery robbery. The operation took place on Wednesday evening near Chuliapur forest under Handapa Police Station limits.
According to police sources, the gang had allegedly carried out a daring robbery at Balaji Gold Refinery in Hatatota, Talcher, on Tuesday evening. The accused reportedly looted around 230 grams of gold, 60 grams of gold ornaments and 700 grams of silver ornaments. They also allegedly abducted an employee of the jewellery unit at gunpoint before fleeing the area.
Following the incident, Talcher police launched an intensive search operation based on intelligence inputs. The suspects were eventually traced to the forest area near Chuliapur, where police teams attempted to intercept them. During the operation, an exchange of fire reportedly took place between the accused and the police.
Two alleged gang members from Maharashtra, identified as Sachin Gajge and Prakash Madane, sustained bullet injuries to their legs during the encounter. They were overpowered, disarmed and immediately shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital for treatment.
Police also arrested two other accused, Rajesh Madane and Deva Prabhakar Lokhande, from the spot. During the operation, officers recovered the entire quantity of the looted gold and silver ornaments, two country-made pistols, live ammunition and the vehicle allegedly used in the crime.
However, one suspect managed to escape and remains absconding. Police have launched a search operation to trace the fugitive and are investigating whether additional individuals were involved in the robbery. Authorities described the operation as a major success in curbing organised criminal activities in the region.
