Contraband and narcotics seized during surprise raid at Jharsuguda District Jail
Bhubaneswar, June 18: In a major crackdown on illegal activities inside correctional institutions, a surprise inspection conducted at the District Jail in Jharsuguda led to the seizure of a large quantity of prohibited articles and narcotic substances. The operation, carried out on Thursday, has raised serious concerns about the smuggling of banned items into the prison despite existing security measures.
The raid was conducted under the direct supervision of the Superintendent of Police, Jharsuguda. A special police team carried out an extensive search of prison barracks, wards, common areas, inmate belongings, beds, toilets and other sections of the jail premises.
During the operation, police recovered several prohibited items, including bidis, tobacco products, gutkha sachets, matchboxes, razor blades, a lighter, ganja (cannabis), narcotic tablets and other contraband materials. All seized items were confiscated for further investigation.
Apart from the recovery of banned substances, the inspection also focused on reviewing the jail’s overall security infrastructure. Officials examined CCTV surveillance systems, inmate management practices and visitor monitoring mechanisms. The Superintendent of Police directed jail authorities to strengthen security arrangements and ensure strict adherence to prison regulations.
Sources said the raid was conducted following intelligence inputs regarding the alleged illegal entry of narcotics and other banned materials into the jail. Investigators suspect that some individuals may have facilitated the smuggling of these items despite established security protocols.
Police have announced a detailed inquiry to determine how the contraband entered the prison and identify all persons involved. Officials stated that strict action will be taken against anyone found responsible, including inmates, jail staff or outsiders. The operation reflects Jharsuguda Police’s commitment to maintaining security and preventing unlawful activities within correctional facilities.
