Odisha begins groundwork for greenfield university in Jagatsinghpur
Bhubaneswar, June 17: The Odisha government has taken a major step towards strengthening higher education infrastructure by initiating the process for establishing a greenfield university in Jagatsinghpur district. The Higher Education Department has directed the district administration to identify suitable land for the proposed institution, paving the way for one of the district’s most significant educational projects.
In an official communication issued on June 12, 2026, the department asked the Jagatsinghpur administration to locate a contiguous land parcel measuring between 50 and 100 acres. The proposed site should be free from encumbrances and situated either within the district headquarters or in its vicinity to ensure easy accessibility.
According to the guidelines, the identified land must be suitable for developing a full-fledged university campus equipped with essential infrastructure such as road connectivity, electricity supply and drinking water facilities. The district administration has also been instructed to ensure proper land records and initiate the process of transferring the land in favour of the Higher Education Department following the prescribed procedures.
The move follows approval from Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi for setting up a greenfield university in Jagatsinghpur. Once the land is identified, detailed information regarding plot details, land classification, possession status and available infrastructure will be submitted to the department for further evaluation.
The proposed university is expected to boost access to quality higher education in the region and create new opportunities for students. The initiative forms part of the state government's broader strategy to expand educational facilities and promote academic development across Odisha. Further action on the project will be taken after the land identification process and necessary approvals are completed.
